November 2016 – President’s Newsletter by David O’Carroll
On behalf of the Illinois IASIU board we want to start off by thanking all of you who attended our golf outing as this has been the 23rd Year we have hosted this event with proceeds benefiting charities. This is always a great opportunity to network with other professionals within the SIU community. The charities that benefited are Misericordia Homes (misericordia.org) and Camp “I Am Me “ – Illinois camp for young burn survivors.
On November 18, 2016, we are pleased to announce that Rick Meza from Greensfelder, Hemker & Gale who will present on “Tips from a Former Inspector General”. Ricardo Meza has tried over 30 federal trials, most to a jury. His background includes spending more than 10 years as an assistant United States attorney, working in the Northern District of Illinois and the Western District of Texas. Ricardo’s experience gives him a deep context for his litigation work, which includes handling complex litigation, internal investigations and white-collar criminal defense. His experience with high-level investigations lends a unique perspective for corporations, universities or public entities who may find themselves in need of an external investigation. Those situations may include allegations of fraud, conflict of interest or financial or personal improprieties. Ricardo also advises those who are facing inquiries from federal agencies regarding allegations of wrongdoing.
As Illinois’ executive inspector general from 2010 to 2015, Ricardo led his office in hundreds of investigations related to waste, fraud and abuse. He had investigative authority over the office of the Illinois governor, 40 state agencies, 250 boards and commissions, nine Illinois public universities and four regional transit boards, as well as private vendors conducting business with those entities. His investigations covered employment, official misconduct, hiring improprieties and procurement. Ricardo’s reputation for fair and thorough work benefits clients who may need to quickly get to the bottom of a difficult situation. As always, we hope that you are able to bring back as much good information from this presentation and will be able to tell those who are not able to attend what new information is being passed on regarding our daily battle against insurance fraud
